GroupNews versus Sharepoint

SharePoint can be a robust intranet for your company, but it isn’t laser focused on being the hub for your company’s internal news and events. That's exactly what we built GroupNews to do.

Your Central News Hub

SharePoint allows each department in your company to stake its own corner of a company intranet. While powerful and flexible, that approach fails at sharing your content all across your company. Problem is, departmental intranet sites reinforce information silos, rather than breaking them down. They end up reflecting the fiefdoms that already exist in your company, and that doesn’t help anybody.

GroupNews is designed to be a true company-wide communication platform. When a department or team sets up a channel, that channel is viewable by everyone in the company by default, and the defaults matter. New content in group-wide channels shows up in everyone’s global news feed, keeping them up to date with everything that’s happening across your entire organization, no matter which department they’re a part of.

Foster Deeper Collaboration

SharePoint tends to be a top-down platform. Content gets posted on there for your consumption. You're not part of the discussion. Go get what you need and move along. If you need to discuss something on there with colleagues, sure, it can kick you over to Teams (see how GroupNews compares), or Viva Engage or whatever Microsoft is calling their chat platform this week, but that content-here-discussion-there approach is not integrated. It’s fractured, disjointed, and complicated.

Your company deserves better than that. GroupNews discussions foster and elevate company-wide collaboration.

By default, every story, every event, and every deadline posted in your GroupNews Group includes a fully featured discussion section in which anyone in your Group can participate. This keeps talks in context, on topic, and integrated. Everyone is empowered to engage in meaningful conversations, share insights, and spin off discussion threads. Later on, because discussions are in context, people can easily find what they need in order to be fully informed.

Enhance Document Sharing

When most people think of Microsoft SharePoint, they think of one thing — document sharing. Unless someone sends you a direct link to a document though, it can be hard to find what you’re looking for.

Why not use GroupNews alongside SharePoint as your document store? Link to your SharePoint documents from your GroupNews stories, and your entire company will be able to find them easily whenever they need without needing to send a dreadful hey, where’s that doc email.

Keep it central, keep it simple

As you can see, GroupNews has a different focus from SharePoint. It offers your company a single, easy to use platform for your company news. A single source of truth. Use it as a replacement for your SharePoint intranet, or use it alongside your SharePoint document store. Whatever works for you and your company. It’s up to you.
